English Translation

Vivian and the Legend of the Hoodoos

Long ago, greedy people angered the coyote spirit Sinawav, who turned them into stone hoodoos as punishment. Now Paiute elders remind misbehaving children of that legend. Vivian has heard the story many times, but this year, as she and her grandmother climb the mesa to gather pine nuts, she's distracted by basketball tryouts. When Vivian disrespects the trees and the land, her grandmother retells the legend of the hoodoos, teaching her how nature has always sustained their people and why respect for it matters.
