    Tlajpiajketl, or The Song of Corn

    In many Indigenous Mexican communities, children learn responsibility early by joining in the daily work of the cornfield. Tlajpiajketl is a boy tasked with chasing away the papanes, birds that threaten the tender young corn. As he watches over the milpa morning and evening, his mind wanders toward the poem taking shape inside him: the Song of Corn. Each poetic episode reveals a lesson drawn from everyday life, blending ritual, nature, and imagination into a lyrical tribute to Indigenous culture and the sacred bond between people and maize.
