    Rhimes and Leyends

    Bécquer's work represented a complete renewal of 19th-century poetic language. Influenced by Romantic authors such as the German Heinrich Heine, his poetry and prose are characterized by a combination of intimacy, the pursuit of the ideal, and the exaltation of fantasy. Far from the rhetorical excesses of earlier literature, Bécquer seeks a much more symbolic and evocative expression. Thanks to his refined and suggestive language, the Sevillian author manages to capture us in the mystery of his Leyendas (Legends) or move us with the lyrical intensity of his Rimas (Rhymes). In short, he is a universal poetic voice that already heralded, as reflected in these pages, the birth of contemporaneity.
