What Was Ellis Island?

From 1892 to 1954, Ellis Island was the gateway to a new life in the United States for millions of immigrants. In later years the island stood deserted and its buildings decayed, until Americans across the country donated more than $150 million to restore it. In 1990 it reopened to the public as a museum. This illustrated chapter book traces the story of one of the nation's most popular landmarks, inviting young readers to discover American history—and perhaps their own family's history—along the way.
