Child and the Corn God
There are many versions of the fascinating myth of Jomshuk, god of corn and mischievous child who escapes death and overcomes a thousand dangers with the help of animals. This unusual illustrated poem tells the version the author heard from his brother and other members of the Popoluca community of Piedra Labrada, in the jungle of Veracruz. It is a story of oral tradition, polyphonic and syncretic: there are some European references, of evil witches, and others of Mesoamerican rituals, with snakes and tlacuaches. Each reader can add his or her own note of music as he or she tells it. Jom, Jom, Jomshuk. How will it sound in your voice? This recreation of the mythical adventure of Jomshuk shows us a cosmovision about motherhood, hunger and the sacred value of nature and corn in our native cultures.
