The Water Maps

In a desert village, the N'Wone—water-women—are essential guardians who learn from childhood to listen to everything, from the flap of white-beaked crows to the whisper of underground streams. When the last N'Wone dies before her time, her eight-year-old daughter Nanga must take her place, even though everyone believes she is too young. As she envies her brother Rai's freedom from such responsibility, the village well grows saltier each day, and only a true water-woman can find the answer before it's too late.
