Baba's Granddaughters

Old Baba lives alone in a little house deep in the mountain forest. One day she accidentally wakes a hungry wolf from her long nap, and he threatens to eat her. Quick-witted, Baba strikes a bargain: her old flesh is tough, she says, but if he comes to her house at nightfall he may choose one of her three granddaughters instead. Rooted in the ancient Bulgarian figure of Baba Yaga—crone, witch, perhaps even Mother Nature herself—this folk tale pits cunning against brute strength, ending in a clever linguistic twist. Illustrator Ina Hristova retells the story her grandfather once told her.
