Land of the Cranes

Nine-year-old Betita knows she is a crane. Papi told her the story before their family fled the drug war in Mexico for Los Angeles: the Aztecs came from Aztlan, "land of the cranes," and prophecy said their people would return. When ICE arrests and deports Papi, Betita and her pregnant mother are detained in a family camp outside Los Angeles. Even in cruel, inhumane conditions, Betita finds shelter in her own poetry and in the community of asylum seekers whose voices rise above the hate that keeps them caged. A moving novel in verse.
