Mama and Papa Have a Store

A young girl guides readers through one day in her parents' Chinese store in Guatemala City. From the clip-clop of the milkman's mule at dawn to the clack of her father's abacus at night, the shop brims with cloth, thread, and buttons from China, and with voices speaking Spanish, Chinese, and Mayan. Mayan customers choose threads in parrot green and mango yellow, her parents recall the homeland they fled during war, and the children invent games on the rooftop. Lyrical text and warm art, drawn from the author's own childhood, earned a Pura Belpre Illustrator Honor.
