It Doesn't Have to Be This Way: A Barrio Story

Monchi loves writing poems and hanging out with his cousin Dorela in the barrio. But when the local gang starts pressuring him to join, the attention and status feel exciting—until a tragic shooting changes everything. With the love and guidance of his Uncle Rogelio, Monchi finds the courage to choose a different path. Drawing on his own youth in a gang, award-winning author Luis J. Rodríguez tells a powerful bilingual English/Spanish story, vividly illustrated by muralist Daniel Galvez, that speaks honestly to young readers about peer pressure, community, and the strength it takes to say no.
