One Was Johnny

One Was Johnny is Maurice Sendak's clever counting rhyme, here presented in Gloria Fuertes' 1977 Spanish adaptation, El Uno Era Juan. Johnny lives alone until a rat climbs onto his shelf, followed by more visitors, as the playful verse counts from one to ten and back again. Sendak's inventive illustrations and rhymes earned praise from the American Library Association, and the story later inspired part of the 1975 musical Really Rosie, performed by Carole King. A delightful introduction to numbers for young readers.
