Grandma's Gift

In this heartfelt autobiographical picture book, acclaimed illustrator Eric Velasquez remembers a Christmas spent at his grandmother's apartment in Spanish Harlem. That year, she took him to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where he first saw Diego Velázquez's portrait of Juan de Pareja—an encounter that would shape his life as an artist. Blending memory, family love, and the discovery of art and identity, this tender story celebrates the bond between grandmother and grandson and the lasting power of a single, generous gift.
