From What They Told the Friar
This text is based on the book Historia eneral de las cosas de la Nueva España by Fray Bernardino de Sahagún. Adapted for children, it talks about the beliefs and customs of the ancient Mexicans: gods, festivals, songs and dances, divinatory art, form of government, judicial system and the office of war. It also talks about the multiple activities that were carried out: astronomy, herbal medicine, fishing. It describes plants and animals of the time, when the species of the old world had not yet arrived. The authors took advantage of the fact that the images of the Florentine Codex closely follow the text to create a kind of historical comic. At the time the Codex was written, the reality presented there had ceased to exist. If it could be recovered, it was through what the indigenous informants told the friar.
