English Translation

Azadah

Azadah, a young Afghan girl, forms a special bond with a German photographer who visits her village. When her friend must return home, Azadah begs to go with her, longing to discover art, literature, and all the wonders her friend has described. She fears that staying means her future is already decided. Told through spare text and stunning illustrations, this picture book celebrates the girls' sincere friendship and the boundless possibilities of the world, so often silenced by war and senseless laws. It is Jacques Goldstyn's moving tribute to photojournalist Anja Niedringhaus, and to every child's yearning for freedom and knowledge.
