English Translation

Let Me Help!

Perico the parrot has picked up a new phrase from little Martita: "Let me help!" As the whole family bustles to get ready for Cinco de Mayo, Perico is certain there must be something he can do. He tries helping abuela make tamales, crafting paper flowers for the family's barge on the San Antonio River, and joining the boys' mariachi practice—but he's shooed away every time, until he discovers his own special way to add to the fun. Alma Flor Ada's bilingual English/Spanish read-aloud, glowing with Angela Domínguez's vibrant southwestern colors, speaks to every child told they're too little to help.
